MCC is replacing historic wood windows at Chelsea City Hall and the Chelsea Public Library under one contract for the City's Department of Public Works: 17 windows at City Hall, including the City Council conference room, the City Manager's offices and the main stair, and 34 on the library's main floor. The City required documented historic wood window experience to bid.
The frames stay in the masonry. MCC removes the old sash, weights and pulleys and installs new wood inserts custom built by JB Sash & Door of Chelsea, the shop that made the existing windows, to Context Architecture's design. At each opening the crew replicates the historic exterior staff bead, rebuilds transom bars and sills, and removes, refinishes and reinstalls the interior trim. Both buildings stay open, so no opening is left rough overnight.
